Dr. Tiffany Dietrich

I have always had a great desire to improve the lives of children, and from an early age dreamed of pursuing a career in pediatrics. I was fortunate to grow up with the mindset that our bodies are not only strong, but capable of great healing. When it came time to consider a career in the medical field, I felt at odds with the conventional approach to heath care. Instead, I chose a different path and decided to study nutrition. It was in the course of working as a nutritionist that I ultimately came to learn about naturopathic medicine. It seemed a serendipitous blend of science and nature that was aligned with my way of thinking about health.

My journey to becoming a midwife was “born” of the same respect and admiration I have for natural medicine. Working with my own midwives provided me with a deep understanding and appreciation for what midwifery care had to offer. Based on this influence, I pursued midwifery training at Bastyr and graduated with degrees in both naturopathic medicine and midwifery. This dual career has provided me with the unique opportunity to not only participate in a child's birth, but to watch that child grow and thrive.

I live in San Luis with my husband, Bill, and daughters, Madison and Sophie. We enjoy trips to the beach, taking in the sights downtown and spending time with friends and family. I am very grateful to be practicing on the Central Coast, and would like to thank all of the amazing women and their families who have welcomed us to this community.

As with many things in life, the road to a destination is so much more visible in retrospect. Had you told me 20 years ago that I would one day be a midwife, I would not have believed you.

I am the mother to four wonderful sons, and my path to midwifery was borne out of my own birth experiences. My first two sons were born via cesarean section, two blessed experiences marked by feelings of deep sadness and lack of support. I was inspired to pursue midwifery care in my third and fourth pregnancies as a way to foster my body’s own natural abilities. My third son was a VBAC (Vaginal Birth After Cesarean) in hospital and my fourth was born at home. Phenomenal midwives, who believed in me and my body, guided me through these births.

These experiences made me passionate about the Midwifery Model of Care. I am a true believer in the state of pregnancy being one of health and not illness. I am an avid protector of a woman’s right to options in her care during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. I believe in the value of education and informed consent.

I hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Cultural Anthropology with a minor in Women’s Studies from the University of the Pacific. In 2003, I became a Certified Childbirth Educator with The Association of Labor Assistants and Childbirth Educator. In 2006, I began working with local midwives and enrolled in the National College of Midwifery (NCM). In 2011, I graduated from NCM with a degree in Midwifery. I am a Licensed Midwife as granted by the California State Medical Board and a Certified Professional Midwife as granted by the National Association of Registered Midwives. I hold active certifications in Neonatal Resuscitation and CPR.

I believe in the value of support, education, and service and have played a key role in bringing the International Cesarean Awareness Network (ICAN) to San Luis Obispo County. This group meets monthly and has offered support to women and families during recovery from cesarean birth, education about provider and birthing options in our area, and community outreach to ensure avoidance of unnecessary cesareans and continued access to VBACs for women either in hospital or at home.

I love spending time with my family and friends, hiking, biking, and running. I am an active volunteer in the local school systems. I am blessed to be raising a family on the Central Coast and to have the privilege of working with such amazing women and families in our community.
